"I enjoyed reading the Marshmallow Martian Books. I offer the following observations of children's reactions to the story:

  • The pictures are attractive to young children because of the use of primary colors.
  • The descriptive narratives uses precise but simple words so that it can easily build a mental picture in young readers' minds. The dialogue is very kid-oriented without violating language conventions.
  • In most cases, there is not too much text on a page. Thus a developing reader would be able to read the text with minimal support.
  • Children can relate to the storyline. Fantasy that is simple enough to be accessible to young children is difficult to find, and I think the stories addresses a niche in young readers that is often difficult to fill. The characters' ages allow for a range of children to identify with them.
  • The elements of the story are within a young child's realm of experience and interest: Martians, school, Christmas, a playground, dreams, peer perceptions, to name just a few."

"My kids have enjoyed reading the book. The cover art...the vibrant colors and the highlighted stars done in the off-setting metallic ink. The text of book was easily read and well spaced to capture their interest. Being kids they were draw to the concept of life in outer space....

We discussed the book at the end of reading it and reviewed the possibilities of living and life in general in outer space. We would highly recommend this series to other parents as it is an excellent vehicle to introduce outer space to them.
